Acne Treatment: Emerging Therapies

Though it is generally known and accepted that acne is not a disease, we can nevertheless not ignore its unpleasant effects on our appearance.

People have been trying countless ways of dealing with acne, from personal solutions to those provided by various myths around this subject -- most of them equally ineffective. Those days are gone now: science has stepped in and there are currently several therapies available to those who want to take better care of the appearance of their skin. Microdermabrasion, chemical peelsand laser therapy are more and more frequently used nowadays.

The starting point of these methods of treatment is that, since acne is linked with excessive sebum production and the level of toxins in the skin pores, reducing these can lead to effective acne control, in addition to their bactericidal effects.

Laser therapy, also called light therapy, is among the most popular treatments for people with less serious forms of acne. Due to the fact that the laser beam can work on the deeper layers of the skin while leaving the surface undamaged, it can reduce the size of the sebaceous glands and kill bacteria without any ill effects on the epidermis. The result is a healthier and better-looking skin.

Alternative light-based treatments include blue and yellow, green, and red light therapy. In the case of blue light, several sessions are needed, each with a duration of up to 15 minutes. The skin may feel temporarily dry and red afterwards, but the sensation normally disappears within a few hours. IPL (intense pulsed light) relies on pulses of red, green, and yellow light applied to the skin. Redness of the skin can again be experienced for a short while after the treatment, though most patients won't have any problems whatsoever. The treatment is not recommended during pregnancy and to people with a very dark (or tanned) skin.

Acid peels are another way to cure acne, usually applied together with other forms of therapy. No pain is normally experienced when using acid peels.

Glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid can also be used for cleansing the skin pores while also tightening the skin.

The use of crystals for removing dead cells is another increasingly popular method. Known as microdermabrasion, it relies on the exfoliating effect of blowing the crystals onto the face and then delicately brushing the face.

Whatever treatment or treatment combination you opt for, make sure to check with a specialist before proceeding. This way, you can avoid undesired side effects and ensure a safe way to a better-looking skin.
