Acne and Nutrition

Chips, pizza, burgers, chocolate and various soft drinks are commonly blamed for all kinds of health problems. So it should not come as a surprise that many people list them among the causes of acne. In this article, well have a look at the possible links between acne and junk food to see whether the accusations are grounded on facts or just myths.

The effect our diet has on our general health is undeniable. Still, we should not rush to view junk food as the cause of all problems. While we might find some connection between an unhealthy nutrition and acne, we should be aware that acne can be the result of many different factors. In other words, cutting on junk food does not guarantee that you'll have a supermodel skin. Moreover, chocolate can even be a weapon against acne. It stimulates the production of serotonin, a hormone that can help reduce acne.

Excesses are, of course, never healthy. Too much junk food can make people fat and increase their blood pressure beyond the safe limits, and it can indirectly be a catalyst for the outburst of acne.

A healthy diet, however, can have beneficial effects on our general physical condition, thus also increasing the chances of maintaining a good-looking skin. The right dosage of vitamins and minerals can boost our health and increase the bodys resistance to infections.

It is a good idea to eat many fruits and vegetables, which are a well-known source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Vitamin A, for example, can keep the membrane lining in good condition and regulate the bodys hormonal activity. Vitamin A should not be taken in doses higher than the recommended ones, as it can settle into the fat tissue of the body, where it is easily dissolved.

Essential fatty acids should not be absent from our diet and neither should elements such as magnesium, zinc and selenium. Zinc helps contain acne to extents as high as tetracycline. It also facilitates different processes in the body, such as enzymatic reactions. Furthermore, zinc can boost the bodys resistance to viral infections.

Selenium can be found in cereals, mushrooms, garlic and foods that are rich in protein - particularly meat. A chemical element belonging to the sulfur group, selenium can be very good in the treatment of acne scars.

Take some time to draw up a healthy nutrition scheme for yourself or ask a nutritionist to recommend a diet to you. With the proper food, your skin can soon look healthier. But if you want to eat an occasional burger or enjoy a cola now and then, don't let the fear of acne stop you.
