Acne and Free Radicals
Antioxidants are often recommended by dermatologists if you want to preserve the skin's youthful aspect and suppleness for a longer time. There are constantly oxidizing reactions going on in our body, but the most visible effects are, of course, on the outside, i.e. on the skin. They occur due to free radicals, or oxygen molecules, which destroy cells and make the skin look less attractive. Even hair loss can be caused by free radicals. Our skin has a natural reserve of antioxidants residing in its layers, which neutralize free radicals and help the skin look young for a longer time. Let's see how we can make sure that we always have enough antioxidants "in stock." You may have gotten tired of hearing and reading about the beneficial effects of fruits and vegetables, but the fact is, they can be a very good source of antioxidants too. Pomegranate, blueberries and grapes are among the fruits with a high antioxidant content. Some vitamins, most notably A, E and C, also have antioxidizing effects. You should know, however, that its not just our skin that needs antioxidants. Antioxidants are also good in the metabolism, so practically our whole body needs them. Consequently, only a very small part (around 1%) of the antioxidants that we eat in the form of fruits and vegetables or vitamin supplements is used for the benefit of our skin. To help our epidermis get more antioxidants, these should be applied directly on the skin. You can either use creams and lotions, most of which can be purchased in drug stores without the need for a doctor's prescription, or you can apply fruit or vegetable pulp or juice on your skin. As far as the lotions are concerned, you should also check their ingredients to make sure they don't contain anything you are allergic to. Finally, you should avoid stress and any kind of strain, whether physical or mental, as that favors the formation of free radicals. Try to have a balanced lifestyle, and you'll soon see how your skin can benefit from that.
