Face Acne Facts
Acne can occur on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back. It can break out in variably serious forms, from small zits to pustules and even painful cysts. Most of the times, however, acne will be visible on the face, especially on the so-called "T" area of the face, comprising the forehead, nose and chin. One reason why this part of the skin is more predisposed to acne is that there is a higher concentration of sebaceous glands here. Fortunately, cysts and nodules are much less frequent here; if they appear, this usually happens on the back and, sometimes, on the chest. The skin on our face also has a higher sensitivity than other areas. In the absence of any clothing to protect it from direct contact with the environment, it is more exposed to dust, dirt in the air and sweat. These can add to the excess sebum and block the skin pores, which leads to acne. It is therefore a good idea to clean your face at least twice a day, but you should do that by washing it and then gently tapping it clean. In no case should you rub the skin, as that will only make it more irritated. Cosmetics are also not the best things for your skin. It may seem to you that you are adding an extra layer of protection, but it is not so at all. On the contrary, they clog the pores even more, especially oil- and cream-based cosmetic solutions. When you touch your face, the dirt on your fingers and nails sticks to your face. Right before you dry your face after washing it, you should wash it with some cold water as well. The low temperature constricts the skin pores, making it difficult for bacteria and dirt to enter. Make sure you use a soft towel for tapping your skin dry, in order to avoid irritation and spreading of the infection, and that the towel is clean. Otherwise, the dirt it picked up the last time you washed your face has a chance to return to your face now. You dont have to avoid all cosmetics, but you should go for water-based ones. Creams and lotions should only be used if you can be sure they have been tested and approved. If you know what you are allergic to, check the ingredients of the cosmetics to make sure they don't contain any of those substances. Finally, a healthy nutrition should improve the appearance of your skin, both by toning it and keeping it free of toxins, and by strengthening the immune system and enabling it to fight bacteria more efficiently. Fruits and vegetables should not be absent from your meals.
