What to Do about Pimples

Unfortunately, the age at which the sexual instincts appear coincides with the age at which acne is most common. Both phenomena are actually caused by the same factor, namely the hormonal changes happening in the body during puberty and adolescence. On the one hand, teenagers will naturally want to look good; on the other hand, pimples form a more or less constant threat to the aspect of their skin. Is there anything to be done against these little swollen red enemies?

It should be said from the very start that squeezing the pimple with your fingers is a bad idea. The infection and inflammation may be spread to neighboring follicles, making thing worse than they were. Still, waiting for it to heal of itself is not easy, even though that normally doesn't take more than a couple of days. There are a few simple, yet effective remedies you can use to reduce the redness and swelling of a pimple.

A very common remedy is toothpaste. You never suspected it could be such a valuable ally against acne, did you? The best way to use it is to apply it on the pimple before you go to sleep in the evening and leave it till morning, when you can simply wash it off. But remember that you should use paste, not gel. Toothpaste reduces the swelling of the pimple and prevents new sebum from accumulating on the pimple.

You can obtain good results with an exfoliation pack as well, as it can be effective in cleaning off sebum, dust and dead skin cells. You can choose from a variety of face masks, based on the type of skin that you have. For instance, a charcoal mask is usually recommended if you have an oily skin.

For more complex home remedies, you can try cucumber or tomato juice. It should be kept on for about a quarter of an hour and then washed off with moderately warm water. They work by tightening up the pores, eventually reducing redness. Apple cider vinegar has a similar astringent effect, being just as effective.

Ice packs can also be used. They reduce the swelling not only due to the natural contraction process triggered by low temperature, but also by keeping the entropic processes inside the pimple in check. Be careful, however, to apply the ice gently. Otherwise, the pimple might break and its fluid content might flow out of it.

A variety of over-the-counter acne medications can help you reduce redness. Examples include benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. It is a good idea to ask a dermatologist before choosing some form of medication to avoid unpleasant side effects and unexpected allergies.
