Acne and the Immune System

Though hormonal imbalances are a frequently mentioned factor that leads to the occurrence of acne, we should not forget that there are important bacteriological aspects to be taken into account as well. In this article, well have a look at how bacteria can determine acne and how the immune system can help restore skin health.

When the skin pores become clogged due to the buildup of sweat and increased sebum protection, the bacteria living in the superficial layers of the epidermis respond by releasing all kinds of toxic chemicals, causing infections and inflammations. The problem becomes worse when the body is unable to properly dispose of dead skin cells. These cells add to the clogging, providing a good environment for bacteria to feed and multiply.

Why are the bacteria there in the first place? Well, bacteria are practically everywhere. Our skin is the first line of defense our body has against harmful intrusions. Most bacteria cannot get past the skin, but they do get as far as the skin, which is why they can be found in the layers of the epidermis. The most common regions of the body where acne can occur are the face (the so-called "T" area, comprising the forehead, nose, and chin), the neck, the chest and the back.

The good news is, our body has a second line of defense as well: the immune system, which fights infections by producing white blood cells, also called leukocytes. These cells belong to the larger family of phagocytes, which derive their name from their ability to ingest and destroy other cells and microorganisms. Leukocytes come in many different varieties: T cells, lymphocytes and so on. What we need to remember about them is that they are our body's number one fighters against harmful microorganisms. Whenever an infection is detected somewhere in the body, white blood cells are sent to the scene to neutralize the bacteria (or, in other cases, virus) causing it.

It should now be obvious that the stronger our immune system is, the less easy it is for bacteria to stay within the epidermis. A properly functioning immune system will speed the healing of the skin.

A healthy diet is the best way to ensure that our immune system is apt to successfully combat these infections. We should eat food that provides sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals, as well as other substances such as zinc and magnesium. You can either devise a dietary plan for yourself or ask a nutritionist for advice.
