Hormonal Imbalances and Acne
Acne occurs when the epidermal pores are filled with sebum, sweat and dead skin cells. The buildup of sebum is due to the increased activity of the sebaceous glands, which is, in its turn, determined by hormonal factors - more specifically, by a lack of balance in the production of various hormones. Sex hormones play a particularly important role in the outbreak of acne, which is why this condition is so characteristic of puberty and adolescence. Gonadotropins are often mentioned among the hormones connected with acne, and among them, androgens are a particularly strong factor. They are actually male sex hormones, but the adrenal gland is present in the female body as well, so androgens are produced in women too, even though in smaller quantities. Still, the lower amount does not make them a less significant cause of acne in the case of women. There are many different kinds of androgens, but there are three of them that have the most significant influence on the secretion of sebum in the body. These three are testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate. But teenagers are not the only ones affected by acne due to hormonal imbalances. Pregnant women also experience acne outbreaks due to the ebbing and flowing of hormonal secretion in their body during this period. Most of the times, however, acne does not occur in severe forms in this case and it does not take long to heal. It usually doesn't reappear once the pregnancy period has ended. Another moment when women are prone to acne is when they reach menopause. The body starts producing much lower amounts of female sex hormones at this stage, while maintaining the production of androgens at the same level. This creates an imbalance and it can lead to acne outbursts. Apart from hormones, peoples lifestyle can also influence their susceptibility to acne. Stress and nutrition are among the most frequently quoted factors from this category - though it's true that the link between them and acne is only an indirect one. Genetic reasons are sometimes identified as the cause. If one of the parents has, or has had, problems with acne, this proneness may be passed on to the children. Teenage acne is usually a temporary condition and it can be ameliorated with proper personal hygiene and healthy dietary habits. In the case of adults, medication is sometimes recommended to alleviate skin irritation and inflammation. Remedies usually work by controlling the production of hormones or sebum or to destroy the bacteria that gather in the inflamed regions. Many of these acne medications are available over the counter, but it is advisable to check with a doctor before starting a treatment.
