Acne Scars: Remedies from Grandmas Cupboard

Acne can nowadays be treated in many different ways, with a variety of medicines being available over the counter in most drug stores. There are people who feel more confident about using some sort of medical remedy for various reasons. Still, others tend to avoid any kind of synthetic treatment, especially on long term, for fear of undesired side effects. Rather than buying acne medications, they prefer to resort to home remedies.

Some of these remedies are so old that they were even known to our great-grandparents. Their effectiveness can therefore be trusted, since they have been tested over a very long period of time. On the other hand, the effects might not be visible in a very short time, and the treatments may be suitable for some people and bring no relief to others. But they are generally harmless, so if one remedy doesnt work, you can always try a different one. You wont run out of alternatives very soon, anyway.

Lets have a look at a couple of examples. Youll notice that they consist of natural products, so even if they dont produce the desired effects, they will not affect your health in a negative way.

One such remedy uses cucumber and tomato juice to fight acne. You just apply it on your face and keep it for up to half an hour. Tomato juice is very effective in preventing skin damage due to its high antioxidant content. In addition to that, cucumber and tomato can tighten the skin pores. Make sure to apply the juice on a clean face. Wash your face with moderately warm water so that there are no traces of makeup or moisturizer left.

You can also use rose water or milk to make sandalwood paste with black gram. This paste is effective against skin irritation and can be kept on your face all night. Clean water is enough for washing it off the next morning.

Somewhat more exotic, but quite useful against acne, are Australian tea tree oil and Indian Neem leaf paste. They kill bacteria, thus reducing the infection. They are also quite effective in the treatment of the scars left behind by acne.

Ordinary as they may seem, egg whites can catalyze the recovery of your skin. They are used as a face mask and should be kept on for a few hours, so it is recommended to apply them in the evening and remove the mask the next morning. Wheat germ is another well known remedy. With its high vitamin and protein content, it can accelerate the healing of scars.

Finally, for an instant remedy, you can try ice packs. Skin pores tighten when exposed to low temperature and the entropic processes that lead to the swelling and inflammation of the skin are slowed down considerably.
