Body Acne: Causes and Treatment

Acne is usually regarded as a discomforting condition due to the effects it has on the aspect of people's faces. However, there can be other inconveniences as well. On the one hand, other parts of the body can be affected, especially when facial acne occurs in serious forms. The neck, shoulders, chest, back and buttocks are prone to acne eruptions, and the condition can sometimes be quite painful.

The causes for body acne are the same as those that lead to facial eruptions. A buildup of oil, dead cells and toxic residues in the epidermal pores can provide a favorable environment for bacteria, eventually leading to eruptions in the form of pimples.

Still, just keeping the skin clean is not a guarantee that you wont have to worry about acne. The condition is also linked with the hormones. Disturbances in the bodys hormone production typically cause acne eruptions. Stress worsens acne, increasing the time needed for the lesions to heal and weakening the skins immunity to irritations.

Rubbing the skin and squeezing the pimples are not so easily avoidable in the case of body acne, because regular everyday movements and continuous friction with the clothes make it difficult to protect the skin in those areas. The risk of scarring is also higher in this case. When a pimple breaks, the pus can easily infect the region around the lesion, so its easy to understand why some simple precautions are needed. To be safe, reduce friction with clothing items as much as possible. Tight clothes are not recommended. Also, jewelry can aggravate the condition. If your shoulders are affected, you should be careful with backpacks and shoulder bags.

Measures for keeping your skin smooth and hydrated also include using soft towels after washing your body, as well as moisturizing and hydrating solutions. Cream or oil-based lotions are not a good idea, since they can make the skin even more oily. Also, pH-balanced soaps can have beneficial effects on the general condition of your skin. Additionally, bed linen should be kept hygienically clean (antiseptic solutions are the best choice), in order to prevent reinfection due to the contact between your skin and the bacteria residing in them.

As for medication, accutane tablets are generally regarded as the best remedy. The treatment should be maintained for six months for best results. Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid have also been known to work.

Finally, remember that we are what we eat. Our immune system and skin health are also influenced by our dietary habits. Check nutrition information available in magazines and on web pages or ask a nutritionist to choose the best diet for you.
